I was recently transferred to a less busy station, where there was some notable neglect in maintenance and station pride. All of the wooden handle tools were dried out and greying, and the metal blades and heads were pitting with surface rust.A bunch of sandpaper, steel wool, and elbow grease prepared them for an application of Old Papi’s Tool Lube, and the results were phenomenal. Once coated thick, I worked the Tool Lube into the wooden handles and swirled it on the metal components, then wiped the excess off until the cloth swiped clean. The result was a deep, lustrous grain and a dull but clean sheen across the entire tool. Axes that once required significant force to remove from their brackets now glide out with ease, and water beads off effortlessly.Old Papi’s was easy to wipe off the hands each time the bell rang and for lunch. It does have a rather strong petrochemical smell, but it reminds me of the similarly brown petroleum-wax called Cosmoline, which has been used by armies for many decades in the past to preserve huge caches of rifles, and to great effect.I’m confident with routine maintenance and proper use these hand tools will last many more years. Get some Old Papi’s Tool Lube for your firefighting hand tools, this stuff works!
