Despite its low price, this tool is very accurate. Ended up using this with both the back side rod of calipers to start, then used with a depth micrometer. In my case, I had to shave down the plastic peg since it was larger than the indent on my pinion gear and would not let the too set flush. If single person operation is desired, find something heavy and small to set on top this tool to hold it against the pinion face. Holding with your hand will heat up the tool and throw off readings. I also noticed the tool had up to +0.004" deviation depending on how hard the measurement arm is pressed. That's still much better than the multi-piece depth checkers with three arms, but something to be aware of.... at the end of the day you still need to read patterns.
